Duties of the Department


The Department of Public Works helps keep the City of Portland moving each day with many areas of responsibility. We collect your garbage and recycling, clear your streets of ice and snow in the winter, help maintain the city's sewer system, build your sidewalks, manage the city's traffic lights and street signage, and the list goes on.

  2. Construction Update for Madison, Walnut, Washington Sewer Separation Project

    Around April 15, 2019 construction will resume with the removal of pavement and existing cobbles from curb to curb on Washington Ave from Walnut St to Cumberland Ave. During the construction work on Washington Ave, the road will be reduced to one lane.
  3. Preble St at Marginal Way CLOSURE POSTPONED TO 4/20 & 4/21

    This closure has been postponed due to weather. The closure at the intersection of Preble Street at Marginal Way will occur Saturday, April 20 and Sunday, April 21, 2019 for the installation of storm sewer pipes across the intersection. Read on...
